How to Knit a Hose

Knitted goods were increasingly available in Europe from the fourteenth century, and the technique transformed the way that people dressed their legs. Woven stockings had to be tailor-made, and often wrinkled, stretched out, and fell down; knitted stockings however could be bought ready-made and would fit close to the leg. Silk stockings were an especially popular luxury product and one of the key novelties in Renaissance European fashion. By the end of the fifteenth century, there were thousands of professional knitters in Europe, many of whom were children.
