Henry Obeng: “The Trail”

Online Launch May 8, 2021. Inspired by botanical history, land use, and plant ecologies as they relate to us as citizens and noncitizens, this exhibition builds connections between Obeng’s experiences as a surveilled non-citizen and plant specimens in the UW–Madison Herbarium through hundreds of cyanotype images presented on handmade paper made from recycled Badger T-shirts.

Conversation between MFA candidate in Textiles/Design Studies Amanda Thatch and Zoe Cohen, PhD candidate in Interdisciplinary Theatre Studies. Cohen will also read “Thrum,” the lyric essay she composed in response to Thatch’s work, and the two will discuss their book.

Amanda Thatch: “Tromp as Writ”

Online Launch: April 16, 2021. To weavers, the phrase “tromp as writ” means that the sequence of threading is repeated in the foot-operated treadling; a single set of instructions can function for both setting up the loom and for the movement of the weaver’s feet while working. The pieces in this exhibition explore the interaction of text and pattern through hand-woven images.

The Portal: Call for Entries

“The Portal” is a juried online exhibition featuring student-designed historic interiors. The virtual exhibition will showcase selected period rooms designed by students of the course “DS 422: History of Architecture (18th Century to Present)” in the Fall 2020 semester.

Design 2021: Call for Entries

This spring, the CDMC and the Design Studies Dept. present “Design 2021,” a virtual edition of SoHE’s annual juried student exhibition. UW–Madison students of all majors are invited to submit their best design work generated through Design Studies courses over the past 4 semesters.
